JOB: Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) Associate - Modelling multivariate extremes for flood risk analysis (2 years)
JBA Consulting
Lancaster University
Closing date 9th May 2014
Two-year fixed term post in industry for a post-doctoral statistician, to be based in Skipton, North Yorkshire, UK, working with Lancaster University, salary between £25,759 and £29,837 p.a. with additional training and development allowances.
The Job:
You will lead this exciting project which aims to extend and generalise a multivariate conditional exceedance model for environmental extremes relating to flood risk. You will improve on existing prototype applications by including information about rainfall extremes, extending the model to include a broader range of spatial and temporal scales, and also investigating physical constraints on the processes represented by the statistical model.
The project builds on strong existing research links between Lancaster University and JBA. As a KTP Associate you will be employed by Lancaster University, but will be based at JBA, which is located in Skipton, United Kingdom, close to the Yorkshire Dales National Park and about one hour’s travel from Lancaster University.
You will work closely with and be supported by academics from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, led by Professor Jonathan Tawn, and the senior management team at JBA. Funding for the post includes the necessary support for regular meetings with Professor Tawn and other Lancaster academics.
The Candidate:
For this post, the ideal candidate is expected to have a PhD in Statistics with some knowledge of extremes. Exceptionally, a strong candidate qualified to a similar level in another numerate science background (e.g. engineering, physics) may be considered, subject to being able to demonstrate a suitable level of expertise in statistics.
Experience working with environmental data would be desirable, along with demonstrable ability to write and document scientific software (for example “R” packages) and to manage large data sets. Additional attributes in a successful candidate will include good project management and team working skills, and a high standard of written and personal communication skills. You must be eligible for employment in the UK for the duration of the project.
Reward package:
Salary will be between £25,759 and £29,837 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. The reward package also includes an additional £4,000 personal training and development budget offering excellent opportunities to further your professional development and support your career progression. You will be encouraged to present papers at national and international conferences.
