Department of Politics and International Relations
Research Studentships in the Department of Politics and International Relations based in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities
The Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Westminster is pleased to offer Studentships for prospective PhD students starting in September 2014.
Applications are invited for the following awards which is tenable for up to three years for full-time study:
One Fee waiver (home/EU rate*) and £16,000 per year for 3 years
Up to two Fee waivers (home/EU**) and £5,000 per year for 3 years
*Please note that while overseas fee paying students may apply, the fee waived would be at the home/EU rate
**Please note that only home/EU students are eligible for this partial scholarship
We are looking for high quality prospective doctoral students who will contribute to at least one of the three core areas of research within the department.
• The Centre for the Study of Democracy (CSD): Established in 1989 CSD is internationally renowned for the quality of its research into the theory and practice of democracy, particularly in Europe, the Arab world and in the United States. Key potential supervisors in this area include Graham Smith, David Chandler, Abdelwahab el-Effendi, Simon Joss, Ricardo Blaug, Maria Holt, Tassilo Herrschel, Paulina Tambakaki, Dan Greenwood and Ben Pitcher.
• The Security and International Relations Programme: This programme includes a number of research strands reflecting the international standing of its members such as intervention and statebuilding, borders and identify, and security theory. Key potential supervisors include, Roland Dannreuther, Dibyesh Anand, Aidan Hehir, Patricia Hogwood, Thomas Moore, Magdalena Frennhoff Larsen and Matthew Fluck.
• Emerging Powers Programme: The new Emerging Powers Programme (EPP) undertakes research which engages with the challenges and developments in the Global South and how the shifting dynamics in non-Western regions are changing the structures and processes of international politics. Key potential supervisors include Dibyesh Anand, Roland Dannreuther, Farhang Morady,Hannah Cross and Jamie Allinson.
In the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise 60% of the Department’s submissions in Politics and International Relations were “recognised internationally in terms of originality, significance and rigour”. Based in the heart of London, we have an active research culture, including the highly regarded CSD Encounter as well as research seminars and conferences linked to each of our core research areas.
