Dear Dr Marinelli,

Your work on non-destructive diagnostic for historical books documents. I have forwarded your message to two colleagues who are preparing an UK funding bid regarding bindings and describing them.

I hope to be able to contact you soon with some more information.

With very best wishes,

Marian

Dear Marian,

our reasearch activity involves non destructive diagnostic of historical books and documents. In particular we are involved in the study of the structure and preservation state of bookbindings and other complex elements like illuminations. We have developped a new method based on Infrared Thermography to detect and characterize written scraps buried in the bookbindings. This technique allows in many cases to read such hidden text beneath the endleaves in a nodustruction way (see for example "Hidden Text Detection by Infrared Thermography" Fulvio Mercuri / Roberta Gnoli / Stefano Paoloni / Noemi Orazi / Cristina Cicero / Ugo Zammit / Massimo Marinelli / Folco Scudieri Restaurator. International Journal for the Preservation of Library and Archival Material. Volume 34, Issue 3, Pages 195–211, August 2013). For more information on our activity regarding library and archive material see for example Parchment ageing study: new methods based on thermal transport and shrinkage analysis, A Riccardi, F Mercuri, S Paoloni, U Zammit, M Marinelli, F Scudieri, e-PS 7, 87-95 2010 and Thermographic study of the illuminations of a 15th century antiphonary, Journal of Cultural Heritage, Available online 31 December 2013, Giulia Doni, Noemi Orazi, Fulvio Mercuri, Cristina Cicero, Ugo Zammit, Stefano Paoloni, Massimo Marinelli DOI 10.1016/j.culher.2013.12.001) If you think that we could be kind of partner you are looking for, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely

M.Marinelli
