Just a quick one I'm afraid as I'm out the office this week and about to head to a meeting.
The full audit spec since 2008 has asked HERs to provide a brief history of themselves as part of the introduction. I can't speak for audits prior to this but I think ones n 2006/7 despite being laid out differently were more similar to current audits than the RCHME ones of the late 90s which concentrated on the data itself rather than service as a whole. We tend not to ask this again when HERs do their audit revisits so once you're in the current audit programme you only really do this once. Nick has far more information about this than I so I'm sure he will correct me if I'm wrong!
Sometimes its good to celebrate things but it does rely on you remembering/realising there is an anniversary coming up. It was pulling together some statistics on HER Forum that made me realise that this year was a 'significant' year of sorts so in some ways a pure accident.
Any further ideas of ways we can celebrate on list? I do accept e-mails off list if you don't want to shout them out to the rest of the list!

This all touches on an issue I was discussing with folk in Norfolk and Suffolk HERs last week – we should really be keeping histories of how our HERs have developed – technological changes, staff, significant data acquisitions and enhancement programmes, changes in recording policies, etc.
This is really important for many reasons, and some do so already. But for many HERs it seems to be mainly in the heads of the senior members of the community (or lost forever)!
Just a thought, but we would be happy to provide and host a web site with a kind of history for every HER, that you (HER officers) would be able to complete as time permits from the year dot and then into the future. Permissions to edit the history for each HER could either be limited to that HER itself, or open to anyone who knows stuff… you decide. I think public location for this would be useful, more so than private documents.
Would this be useful? Or perhaps it should be within IFP?

I hope that someone still has an optical incidence card reader. It should go into the SMR/HER museum when one is created – or perhaps there could be an online museum – that would be a way of celebrating 15 years of HER forum or in 2017 50 years of SMRs.

… if you will excuse a reminisce. When I first started with Berkshire SMR in the1980s the optical coincidence reader was stored under my desk. We didn’t use it, but it was there in case we needed to return to ‘old school’ methods. The SMR was on the mainframe, and our call on computing time was over night when there was spare capacity. When the first desk computers were installed, one of two per department, we were told the future would be OPD (one per desk), but that seemed like a pipe dream.

He says that:

Yes, Don Benson set up the Oxon SMR, the 1st local authority SMR, but in 1967 not 1965 – James Bond corrected me as I thought the same thing!

15 years is an achievement, but don't lose sight of the longer and more venerable heritage. We must be approaching the 50th anniversary of Saint Don Benson starting the Oxfordshire SMR - was it 1965 ? Susan Lisk: are you still there and can you enlighten / confirm ? That should indeed be a celebration.

A Friday question with a bit of a difference but definitely on topic :)
This June the HER Forum list celebrates its 15th birthday. This is quite an achievement, especially as the list remains quite active.
It would be great if we could find a way to celebrate this achievement on the list - a digital celebration if you will. So for the week where the birthday falls we'd like to do some on-list activities. We'll be asking you to reminisce about your time on the list, what you like about it etc. (So make sure you save your stories for then!) We will also be asking for you ideas for the future for both the e-mail list and the Forum meetings.
However I'd like to throw this out to you, the subscribers, and ask what you would like to do to mark the occasion? Maybe a special Friday query session or a quiz of sorts?
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
