Speaker : <http://emgg.lboro.ac.uk/Apr14Bio.htm>Dr Benoit Jones
(University of Warwick)
This lecture will be given by Dr Benoit Jones, Director of the MSc in
Tunnelling and Underground Space at the University of Warwick. The
talk will draw on his previous experiences with tunnel monitoring
while working for Mott MacDonald, Morgan Sindall and OTB Engineering
on projects such as the Heathrow Terminal 5 tunnels, Kings Cross and
Tottenham Court Road LU Station Upgrades and the Stoke Newington to
New River Head Thames Water Ring Main Extension. It will also cover
current research at the University of Warwick on new monitoring
methods for sprayed concrete tunnelling.
Abstract :
Different instrumentation and monitoring schemes for tunnels serve
different purposes: as part of an observational approach, for design
verification, for research, or to control risks to third parties. It
is important to be clear about the objectives and to communicate
these to all parties. Using examples from large and small projects
with different monitoring schemes and objectives, these issues will
be discussed.
As well as providing detailed focus on particular issues through the
use of case studies, the main objective of the lecture is to provide
an overview of tunnel monitoring with the aim of ensuring it is
rational, feasible and provides the required information in a useful format.
