My understanding is a check cannot be done until the person has been resident in the UK so we would not not undertake a check before arrival when that was not the case but would be seeking whatever statements of character were available from the authorities in the country of residence. Judgements then have to be made as to whether these are reliable and taken in the context of other evidence such as references.

Thank you for your response, my concern is students do not tend to open a bank account until they arrive in the UK and as the placement visits start so early in the course, it is unlikely the DBS check will be back in time if we wait until they arrive.
