Dear London Comm Psych Network

Hope everyone is well. Welcome to the newcomers to our network! Thanks to everyone who attended the Mark Burton talk. It was brilliant and slides can be found here:
http://tinyurl.com/nn23ncm

An email with details of the next two London network sessions are due to follow this - but for now just to let you know the date of the next session is likely to be Tues 20th May at 6.30pm.

In the meantime, thought I'd share a few (hopefully) relevant events and ideas that might be of interest to people. Please do send round to colleagues and friends.

And don't forget to keep a watch on and please contribute to our Community Psychology interactive site (and to join it if you haven't already)?

http://communitypsychologyuk.ning.com/

Once you have a profile - you can add events, groups, notes, comment on discussions etc - so help us keep the movement lively and active and get involved! Also please email me with ideas for sessions, socials and activism!

But for now brace yourselves, practice that mindful attention and hold on to your community seats - this is a long list of items...

Subject: Courses: Applied Research Methods with Hidden, Marginal and Excluded Populations (University of Essex)

(2R) Applied Research Methods with Hidden, Marginal and Excluded Populations https://www.essex.ac.uk/summerschool/pages/courses/session2/2r.html

School in Social Science Data Analysis, University of Essex (UK)
21-25 July 2014 (full time)

Download course description and detailed outline here: http://goo.gl/DUIRCF

The course (10th Edition) provides an introduction to research methods in conducting research, both qualitative and quantitative, with marginal, hidden and excluded populations, with a specific focus on equity related research. The course introduces the main theories and research approaches on hard-to-reach populations (such as children victim of trafficking, child labour, homeless and displaced children, migrant children, children in conflicts and natural disasters ) , using different frameworks and techniques.

This intensive course will provide tools to address key quantitative and qualitative issues such as the lack of known sampling frame; the difficulties in reaching the target group; the concepts of impact, attribution and contribution; and the political dimension of research findings. The course explores topics such as: estimation and sampling techniques; participatory research; evidence-based policy versus policy-based evidence; innovation, crowdsourcing and the use of technology; the art of combining qualitative and quantitative methods; and ethical considerations arising when conducting research with hidden and marginalized populations.

6. Details of the European Community Psychology Association task force on austerity.

The task force is being coordinated by the European Community Psychology Association and the focus is on the impacts of various austerity policies across Europe on people’s mental health and wellbeing. Our overall aim is ‘Increasing understanding by policy-makers, community organisations, and professional bodies of the way austerity politics is affecting communities in Europe, and what communities are doing to fight back’. As part of this remit we will be producing a report that draws on academic research but also gathering brief witness statements from with people to gather together experiences of those living and working in the current austerity regimes. This will include community members, community and voluntary sector organisations, charities, professionals and psychologists, among others. We hope that the initial report takes the form of community psychologists like ECPA and the BPS section providing a coordinated and constant voice of public resistance from our discipline in partnership with other organisations.

The task force is being co-ordinated by Carl Walker and he is facilitating a London Community Psychology Network session on this topic in early June. If you’re interested in contacting Carl in the meantime you can email him at Carl Walker [log in to unmask]

7. Details of some austerity related events and campaigns from outside of the psychology world.
The People’s Assembly Against Austerity are running campaigns, protests, petitions against the government’s austerity agenda
http://www.thepeoplesassembly.org.uk/

There will be a National Demonstration and free festival in London on June 21st 2014 – Join and spread the word amongst your colleagues!

The New Economics Foundation (my favourite organisation!) are running a series of events about the economy in lighthearted style. See here:

8. Consultations and influencing policy

Hope some of these strike a chord!

Thanks so much
