Applicants are invited to apply for a full time PhD opportunity at the University of Ulster researching:
The use of connected health solutions to promote physical activity in older age.
It is the aim of this Project to consider the role of connected health solutions in both monitoring and promoting physical activity within older adults. Specifically, intelligent wearable monitoring solutions will be considered from two perspectives. In the first instance their level of acceptance and perceived utility for use by older adults will be considered and in the second instance their accuracy and stability from a technical perspective will be assessed for monitoring periods of both activity and sedentary behaviour within the home environment and beyond. Through the integration of such a wearable platform within a pervasive environment the research aims to investigate, for the first time, the relationships between activity, spatial information from the home environment and contextual information related to the person's careplan. This will formulate the basis for the development of personalised behavioural models which will be used as the core of an activity recognition framework to be used to provide motivational feedback to users to increase levels of activity in instances of sedentary periods. Through incorporation of spatial and contextual information it is hypothesised that the provision of motivational feedback to increase levels of activity will be provided at more appropriate times and hence will have a higher likelihood of motivational success.
