—————————————————————————————————————————
We are seeking candidates for a 3 year PhD studentship in genetic epidemiology/statistical genetics. The individual will be based with the Computational Biology team, part of the Experimental Haematology laboratory at the University of Cambridge. The laboratory, led by Prof Willem H Ouwehand, is dedicated to understanding the formation of blood and platelets in healthy and diseased individuals.
The team applies computational and statistical techniques to analyse and interpret experimental and epidemiological data generated by the laboratory and its collaborators. Rapid advances in bio-molecular technologies mean that it is now affordable to measure human genetic variation systematically in large numbers of individuals. The research student will work to understand some of the biological mechanisms generating variation in human blood traits using genetic data from cohort and cross-sectional population studies. The precise direction of the research will be agreed upon appointment but possibilities include:
• investigating the determinants of the physiological response to blood donation;
• seeking to identify genetic variation associated with functions of the multivariate output of automated haematology analysers;
• predicting the haematological response to blood donation using genetic information
• identifying biological mechanisms responsible for variation in blood parameters and blood donation response from associated genetic variants
Applicants should hold or expect soon to be awarded a first or good upper second class honours degree in a quantitative subject such as statistics, mathematics, physics or computer science at bachelors or masters level. The appointee will receive the necessary training in applied statistics, genetics and epidemiology. However, prior experience of and an aptitude for computer programming are highly desirable
The post will appeal to candidates with a numeric background keen to develop their career in biomedical research working in Next Generation Sequencing Technology and working with a leading team of quantitative scientists and bioinformaticians.
