Exercise is key to addressing Wales' child obesity crisis but has been
'sat on the side lines' of the debate in how to tackle the issue for too
long, according to a leading organisation.
.
In evidence submitted to the National Assembly's Children and Young People
Committee, Sport Wales said physical activity played a significant role in
addressing rising rates of obesity in children but believed there had been
a lack of focus on its role in tackling the issue.
.
The organisation said that participation in sport needed to become a
natural habit, rather than a choice and that culture change is needed in
Wales for the nation to move from being sports supporters to "active
participants".
.
According to the Welsh Health Survey 2012, 34% of children are classified
as overweight or obese, while a recent report by Public Health Wales found
a significant number of children in school reception classes are
overweight or obese.
.
The findings, based on the national Child Measurement Programme, showed
28% of children aged four and five had an unhealthy body mass index (BMI),
with 12.5% falling into the obese category.
.
The number of adults in Wales classed as overweight or obese has increased
to 59%, with 23% in the "obese" category, and just 29% being physically
active on five or more days.
.
Simon Jones, public affairs manager for Sport Wales, said: "We firmly
believe that sport has a key role to play in improving the overall health
of the nation and for too long has been sat on the side lines of the
national debate in relation to health and obesity.
