Hello,
I'm asking for advice / opinions on the retention of children's SEN files and other records of special needs i.e. autism.
We currently retain these records for DOB + 35 years.
I've checked some sources and DOB + 25 year retention seems a popular choice, which I'd like to recommend, but I'm aware the Children & Families Bill 2013 (due later this year) extends the provision of some of the children's and families services (including SEN) from people aged 18 years to 25 years old.
I'd be interested to know if anyone with the 25 year retention is considering:
(a) extending their retention period to account for the proposed Bill changes, i.e. from DOB + 25 years to say DOB + 31 year (based on the 6 year limitation period); or,
(b) keeping the 25 year retention for the files, unless a complaint is made in which the file will be kept for a further period - probably 6 years after the final outcome.
If you're not aware of the Bill and interested, its here: http://www.education.gov.uk/a00221161/children-families-bill
Many thanks,
Mark
