Please see below for info from Billy Clark:

Dear Palans,

I am writing to draw your attention to a number of PhD Studentships currently being offered at Middlesex University (the deadline is close: 14th March). I have included an email about this below.

The range covered is very broad but includes 'Language and writing: creative writing, language and linguistics'. Applications in areas of linguistics or stylistics would be very welcome. Competition will be tough, of course.

I'd be very happy to respond to any informal enquiries about the studentships. If you'd like to ask me anything, you can contact me at:

Best wishes,

Middlesex University
Media and Performing Arts Research Studentships, 2014.

The School of Media and Performing Arts, led by the Dean, Professor Carole-Anne Upton, has recently benefited from major investment in its research areas. We enjoy an exceptional group of Professorial and senior research staff in Media, Cultural Studies, Dance, Music and Theatre Arts and a strong research culture within which our PhD candidates are centrally positioned.

Performing Arts celebrated considerable success in RAE2008, and includes the internationally-renowned Centre for Research into Creation in the Performing Arts (www.rescen.net<http://www.rescen.net>). Research in Media focuses on Cultural Theory and Communication Studies, with particular interest in Gender and Sexualities.

Alongside traditional approaches to doctoral studies, we have particular expertise in practice-as-research. We offer two forms of practice-led research degrees, a "mixed-mode" PhD in which the integration of theory and creative practice is foregrounded, and a Doctorate of the Arts (80% expert arts practices), which is suitable for experienced practitioners.

We welcome innovative and interdisciplinary proposals from excellent candidates that reflect the research interests of Middlesex Media and Performing Arts staff. Applicants are advised to consult the School web pages and our staff profiles: http://www.mdx.ac.uk/aboutus/staffdirectory/index.aspx

Research areas of particular interest include:

* Cultural studies: gender and sexuality, film and philosophy, cultural theory

* Dance: choreography and improvisation, pedagogy, theatre dance histories and philosophies

* Language and writing: creative writing, language and linguistics

* Media industries: practice and analysis of policy and practice

*       Music: musicology, composition, performance

* Theatre Arts: devising and dramaturgy, translation for performance, applied theatre and philosophical concerns

We look forward to receiving your proposals.

Any queries should in the first instance be directed to Prof Vida L Midgelow, Director of Research Degrees (School of Media and Performance):

If you have any enquiries regarding the application process, or the studentships generally, contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Eligibility

The bursaries are offered on a full-time basis to EU/UK and Overseas applicants and cover a maintenance award and fee payments at the UK/EU rate, currently £13,863 and £3,996 respectively; note that Overseas applicants will be required to cover the difference between the UK/EU and International Student fee - currently £9,700.

The Scholarships are for three years, subject to satisfactory progress. The level of the maintenance element of the Scholarships is linked to the level of corresponding awards made by UK research councils and is subject to regular review. The studentship bursaries are free of both tax and national insurance contributions.

Applicants must have a minimum of a first or an upper second class honours degree or equivalent, and preferably a good masters degree, in a relevant area. If your first language is not English, you should have a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with a minimum of 6.0 in each component) or TOEFL 575 (paper-based), 87 (with at least 21 in listening and writing, 22 in speaking and 23 in reading) (computer-based).

In addition to work on the doctoral research project, successful applicants will be expected to contribute to associated activities within their respective Schools.
