Hi Zac
I think much will depend on your situation in UAE. Are you there for a couple of years with plans to return to the UK or have you decided to make UAE your home on a more permanent basis?
I ask this because my ideal view would be to base yourself in the UK and try and gain work with either one of the larger providers or large in-house employers who can fund your training. Things have changed over the years in that the latter are much rarer than they used to be as so many have contracted their OH Services out to the former. You would need to choose your provider well and find one that will give you plenty of support and some variety and not just stick you on a telephone based service day after day. Alternatively, try and get into one of the NHS departments for a few years initially.
If you want or need to remain in UAE for the foreseeable future, then distance learning and all that goes with that will be your main route to a qualification. It would still be better to find a bigger employer in UAE where you are not working alone. Working alone in OH on a first job with little back up is a dangerous place to be. You don't and won't know what you don't know and you can land yourself, the employees and the business in all sorts of problems.
If you are going to be back in the UK, you have probably picked a good time. If you have followed the OH news in the UK in the last year, you will be aware that a new government funded service is about to take shape. Whatever you think about this - and many people on this forum, including me, think a lot - it is going to raise the profile of occupational health in its broadest sense and will have to suck a lot of people into the profession, who are going to have to gain training and experience somehow. Much of this may not be in the traditional model of OH that many of us have developed our careers with but if the Health and Work Service is to deliver anything like it is promising, the profession needs people like you.
All the best with whatever you decide.
Lindsey

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Occupational health practitioners in the UAE-Dubai/Abu Dhabi
Hi I am a British registered nurse looking to change from intensive care to occupational health. I am in full time employment within my current specialty and would be very interested in hearing from those that are:
Trained and working in the UAE
Studied while living out here for OH, either here or within the uk with practice support here in the UAE.
I would gratefully accept any advise you can provide in order that I can hopefully re structure my nursing career towards OH.
Kind regards
Zac Warnes
