Doing Food Research: Qualitative Approaches
Tuesday 1 July 2014, 09:30-16:45, University of Westminster
A one-day workshop hosted by the British Sociological Association Food Study Group and the University of Westminster
Are you interested in doing food research, but would like to... discover what is happening right now in social scientific food research from leading academic researchers? Learn more about different methodological approaches and novel methods? Understand better how to tailor your food research for different funders? Meet others who are conducting social scientific research about food? Take away 'top tips' to apply in your own studies?
Following our one-day international Food & Society 2014 conference at the British Library Conference Centre on 30th June 2014, the British Sociological Association Food Study Group is holding a one-day workshop at the University of Westminster.
The workshop will provide food researchers interested in using particular methodologies and methods with 'tasters' facilitated by experienced social scientists currently or recently using those approaches. The workshop will also help people to better assess the quality of published reports of studies using these methodologies.
The event is aimed at Postgraduate Research Students and Early Career researchers, but may also be useful for those working outside academia, including practitioners.
Following a workshop format with three parallel sessions, the day will also include plenty of time for whole group discussions and networking. Workshops are as follows:
Engaging with multiple sources and types of qualitative data
Dr Wendy Wills, University of Hertfordshire; Dr Frances Short, University of Hertfordshire
Using ethnographic methods in food research: anthropology and beyond
Prof. Harry West, SOAS; Dr Lizzie Hull, SOAS and LCIRAH; Dr Deborah Johnston, SOAS; Sara Stevano, SOAS and LCIRAH
Visual and Mobile Methods
Dr Angela Meah, University of Sheffield
The possibilities and challenges of online data in food research
Dr Rebecca O'Connell and Heather Elliott, Institute of Education; Dr Andrea Tonner, University of Strathclyde
Using archives and reusing qualitative data in food research
Dr Abigail Knight, Institute of Education, University of London; Dr Polly Russell, The British Library, London
Doing food research for government
Dr Alizon Draper, Westminster University; Hannah Lambie-Mumford, University of Sheffield; Helen Atkinson, Food Standards Agency
