Hi Martha,
Very interested in your findings on this, and a great one many people here for the list . An overlooked factor I feel. I'll dig out anything we have here, although my recollection is:
- most guides have been exhibition-related as an enhancement. The marketing for these is piggybacked on the various web and promotional printed materials. The guides are right in sight for visitors as they come in, and especially noticeable when busy and when there is a queue wait
- For apps rather than open web-based tours, placing on app stores doesn't market it per se, but any form of featuring on store home pages tends to have a good hit, so worth considering how that may be achieved via content or otherwise
- we have had gallery guides in the past when launching new large scale galleries, which I think mainly were advertised via paper and through piggybacking any web and promo content
- we are especially interested in wifi splash screens as a customer awareness tool. Very obviously a place to improve visibility of any in-gallery apps to my mind.
- staff using the apps in galleries is something for a six month beta period for the digital Explorer Map: www.vam.ac.uk/map. That was not for promotional purposes, but could be. Gallery staff are experts in helping visitors, so definitely has potential
I am in the process of gathering examples of splash screens as background research for a new web service we are developing for galleries opening later in the year. I will collate, analyse and write up on the V&A Digital Media blog in due course (www.vam.ac.uk/digital ) but here is the Storify of these I have collected to date:

Subject: Signage/marketing for museum apps and tours
Hi all,
I'm gathering examples of how museums and galleries advertise apps or mobile tours in gallery for a project I'm working on at the Science Museum.
Would people on the list mind sharing their own examples with me?
My questions would be: what type of signage do you have to encourage people to download or use an app in gallery? Are you using print, or the wifi login page, or other methods to advertise that an app is available? What have you found successful, or unsuccessful?
I'm hoping to do a fairly wide survey of what various institutions are doing and then will publish it as a blog post as well, as hopefully people might find that interesting and useful. Or does anyone know of anything like that which already exists?
Thanks,
Martha

Hi Martha
Not exactly related, but a shout out on twitter might be useful with a hashtag - like what V&A Andrew (V&Andrew?) did for WiFi splash screens #mobilewifisplash - https://twitter.com/search?q=%23mobilewifisplash&src=hash
We're about to launch an app project (jointly with other parties), so will share our promo material when all is out and about.
