Hi Jayne,
At Dundee we have a managed desktop for staff, maintained by our central IT services. We wouldn't ask them to add the bookmarklet tool to the desktop for 2 reasons:
1. The managed desktop is designed to deliver a minimal environment which each user customises to suit their needs - we have an apps store for software and there are no pre-loaded bookmarks/favourites in any of the browers.
2. In relation to 1, the bookmarklet tool isn't relevant to non-teaching staff - if it were to be included in the managed desktop, some users could mistake this for a browser tool for bookmarking websites.
Ensuring that there is local as well as central go-to people and information is probably the best way to provide support at the point where staff get stuck with installing the bookmarklet - as it's a once-only task, the investment in assisting users (or doing it for them) is probably worth the cost. We're still in the implementation phase, and we intend to put considerable effort into recruiting and supporting teaching staff as 'local champions' across our schools to be able to help their colleagues to use Aspire. We conducted a staff survey about their reading list practices and opinions, and the last question was asking if they would volunteer to pilot the service and provide feedback. The response rate to the survey was very low, but the number of pilot volunteers and the spread across the schools was excellent, so we're building on that base.
Regards,
Linda McDonald
