Quotations and hidden sources. Experiences in reading the Zibaldone
Scholars in literature, arts and philosophy normally deal with such
notions as "source", "influence", "relationship" between writers,
movements, periods. What does an alleged "influence" really consist
of? How do we detect the nature of a "relationship" between authors?
What does a writer really want to say when recalling another one? How
do "influences" work when applied to different genres, such as poetry
and philosophy? These questions become more and more challenging when
addressing European Romanticisms. Post-Revolutionary years witnessed
the most radical questioning of literary tradition after the
Renaissance. We will be discussing theoretical issues focusing on two
paradigmatic figures of European Romanticism, Samuel T. Coleridge and
Giacomo Leopardi.
