Dear Dr. Bie Plevoets
We are the Technical Unit for Seismic Engineering (UTSISM) of ENEA, an Italian Research Agency.
We want to present a project to this call about the "Application of innovative methodologies for the reuse of historical buildings damaged by earthquake".
At the moment we are in contact with the Dept of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering of University College of London (UCL).
For this project ENEA and UCL will carry out the following activities:
· diagnostic and survey campaign for the knowledge of the materials, the structural features, the energetic properties and the conservation state of the buildings (ENEA);
· vulnerability assessment through historical and structural anamnesis, the study of seismic behaviour and damage/collapse mechanisms and the filling of vulnerability forms (UCL);
The above mentioned steps will be carried out in a completely digital way, employing new low cost technologies and devices, thus obtaining a significant reduction in terms of time and costs.
We are looking for a third partner that will carry out the task of the reuse of the building, and we think that you could be such kind of partner.
The project will also test the results on a real case study, a vacant building damaged by the 2012 Emilia-Romagna earthquake.
The aim of the project will be the development of a multidisciplinary and innovative methodology, contributing as a pilot study, suitable for Cultural Heritage buildings, taking into account:
· seismic upgrading, by preserving the original structure and by using mixed reversible technologies;
· energy efficiency improvement employing sustainable materials and technologies, by respecting of the historic features of the building;
· adaptive reuse of the building.
The realisation of all these steps through a digital path will be concluded by the creation of an augmented reality model of the buildings. This instrument makes easily available for the Municipality, as policy maker, all the project results, allowing the realisation of an historical buildings database, useful for the planning of Cultural Heritage maintenance and restoration.
We hope that you will be interested in this topic and we are waiting for your kindly answer.
Best Regards
Lorenzo Moretti

We involve designing as a complementary research method in relation to more traditional methods (historical research, urban studies, case studies). Previous and on-going research projects concern for example:
> - the tension between heritage preservation and retail development in historic city centres in Europe;
> - adaptation and reuse of monasteries in the Belgian province of Limburg;
> - adaptation and reuse of post-war detached dwellings in Flanders in the context of demographic changes, and contemporary planning strategies;
> - aspects and theory of interior architecture in relation to adaptive reuse.

Programs that (1) meet the needs of the local community, (2) are rooted in regional characteristics, and (3) are economically viable. Our interest mainly centers on the development of relevant methodologies for research in (interior) architecture, applicable across diverse regions.
> We are also interested in contributing to similar research proposals regarding adaptive reuse of buildings, settlements and landscapes.
