AIMEN is a Technology Centre with large experience in different non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and applicability on R&D developments.
In these topics, non-destructive testing is of primordial importance.
The capabilities of AIMEN range from different techniques:
- X-ray applications, covering conventional methods as radiography (film based and digital with phosphor plates and direct detector) for in-situ measurements and laboratory applications and new applications as computed tomography. These techniques allow to characterize internally the pieces, to analyze internal structures and distinguish different compound elements.
- Infrared thermography inspection: passive and active applications for in-situ and laboratory surface and subsurface studies.
- Hyperspectral imaging for surface and subsurface inspection and characterization (visual and NIR fields).
- 3D optical measurement equipment for volume digitalization.
All these capabilities are adaptable for different research requirements. Moreover, AIMEN has led several projects for developing specific inspection systems (as X-ray computed tomographs, artificial vision and hyperspectral vision systems), where not only the mechanisms and detector integration is implemented but also the required software applications:
- Consulting and development of a computed tomography system for fossils analyses (in the Institut Catalá de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
- Development of an inspection method for concrete structures through gammagraphy.
- Development of an inspection procedure for thermography inspection of buildings.
- Development of a computed tomography system with dual detector and specific visualization software.
Based on this experience, from AIMEN we'd like to participate in the JPI Cultural Heritage-Heritage Plus Call as a Spanish associate partner.
AIMEN contribution and capacities for cultural heritage cover the two topics of the call: safeguarding tangible cultural heritage and protecting and managing cultural heritage.
