Dear friend,
I am doing both things requested myself on regular basis. Melting and
analysing by EPMA.
2. Depends on the amount of material available and on the kind of
material. If I want to completely melt clay with some quartz sand I place
it into a furnace in a Pt crucible and heat it to 1200 °C - voila.
1. EMPA is completely acceptable on any glass or other material with none
or loose stoichimetry if you check your measuring conditions on materials
with tightly constricted stoichiometry before running your own
measurements. You might try to measure feldspars and olivines f.ex. in
advance. If you come to close stoichiometry in these tests you can be
completely confident in your glass measurements. Please make sure that the
beam is defocusssed to at least 5 µm on glass.
