New piece by Melissa Phillips and Susanna Zanfrini, '"You're just not vulnerable enough"- The situation of urban displacement in Libya', on the Debate Forum of Urban Refugees: http://urban-refugees.org/debate/youre-vulnerable-enough-situation-urban-displacement-libya/
In late 2013 there was a series of tragic boat deaths off the coast of Lampedusa, Italy in the Mediterranean. Following outpourings of grief, multiple statements by politicians and promises to do more, there has been almost no spotlight placed on the country these boats are departing from - Libya. What are the conditions in Libya driving asylum seekers to take risky boat journeys to Europe? How are asylum seekers and refugees treated in Libya and why does there appear to be no effective protection in country? This Debate forum contribution, written by two people working on the ground in Libya, highlights the plight of urban displaced in Tripoli and urges for reform before more people die en route to Europe.
