Call for Papers for IMISCOE 11th Annual Conference, Madrid 27th - 29th August 2014

CfP for two research panels on: “Young people of migrant descent in Europe: membership, transnationalism and citizenship in the aftermath of the economic crises”
Panel 1: Current research and theoretical contributions
Panel 2: Methodological and ethical issues
Organisers: Martha Montero Sieburth (University of Amsterdam), Rosa Mas Giralt (University of Leeds), Joaquín Eguren (Universidad Pontificia Comillas)
The socio-economic impact of the 2008 economic crises in many countries has heightened concerns for the futures and well-being of children of migrants in European societies as well as in other countries. These research panels aim to bring together scholars from across the social sciences working on person-centred research to understand the everyday experiences and affiliations of children and young people of migrant descent (8-25 years of age) in contemporary Europe and beyond. Migrant-centred approaches can be fruitful on two accounts. Firstly, they can provide deeper and more nuanced understandings of migrants’ and their descendants’ affiliations and notions of membership in their settlement societies. These perspectives are essential in order to comprehend the dynamics of ‘social cohesion’ (inclusion and exclusion experiences) and how belonging may develop (e.g. Antonsich 2010; Mee and Wright 2009). Secondly, they can also illuminate how processes of incorporation and transnationalism occur in simultaneous and not contradictory ways and how they explain multi-scaled and territorialized/non-territorialized attachments and affiliations (e.g. Joppke and Morawska 2003; Levitt and Glick Schiller 2004).
For panel 1 we invite abstracts that focus on discussing empirical cases and theoretical contributions to elucidate some of the conceptual approaches that cover a migrant-centred focus on integration and youth in the aftermath of the economic crises; compare and contrast different theoretical approaches in this growing field or present empirical cases or new contributions.
For panel 2 we invite abstracts that address the methodological issues involved in conducting person-centred research and its advantages and challenges; consider comparative perspectives and their methodological issues; reflect on the use of textual/non-textual methods or on the ethical issues involved in person-centred research.
The title and abstract of no more than 250 words, as well as name, title, institutional affiliation and email contact needs to be submitted by 26th March 2014 to: [log in to unmask]
