1. AVA Meeting in York - abstract deadline ***Friday 7th March***
AVA Meeting in York
The AVA Meeting 2014 and AVA AGM will be held in the Department of Psychology at the University of York on Friday 11th April. The theme of the meeting is visual neuroscience.
This year’s keynote speakers will be:
Lars Muckli (University of Glasgow)
Alexander Thiele (Newcastle University)
Serge Dumoulin (Helmholtz Institute, Utrecht University)
Abstracts (up to 250 words) should be submitted by Friday 7th March. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed and published in the journal Perception (assuming presenting authors attend the meeting) and should cover previously unreported research on any aspect of vision in humans, animals and machines.
For further details on abstract submission and registration, please visit the conference website: http://www.theava.net/meetings/ava2014.html
York is a beautiful historical city in the north of England. It has excellent transport links, and can be reached by train from London in around 2 hours.

2. Final Call for candidates for election to the Executive Committee of the AVA - ***Monday 10th March***
The AVA is a UK-based charity that aims to advance, promote, develop and improve the study and knowledge of vision sciences. It does this primarily through organizing regular scientific meetings (usually 3 per year) and making various financial awards (including travel bursaries) to young vision scientists. Every two years italso awards the Marr Medal to an outstanding early-career scientist within 10 years of completing their PhD who has a proven track record of high-qualityindependent research.
The executive committee of the AVA is responsible for running the society and organizing these activities. It consists of ten voting members (plus co-opted members as appropriate) and meets three times a year (plus the AGM around Easter).
It is constantly on the lookout for 'new blood'. Several present members will not be standing for re-election, and this call aims to recruit new candidates for positions on the Committee. We are keen to see a broad range of candidates to represent the interests of AVA members across diverse areas of vision science.
Nominations will also be accepted for any one of the four honorary positions (chairman, vice-chairman, treasurer, secretary). But to ensure continuity, it is normally expected that nominees would hold a position on the committee for at least one year before being nominated for one of these positions.
Election is for one year, 2014-15. The on-line election will be in March 2014, with results taking effect after the AGM (April 11). From 2015 we anticipate a newcommittee structure that will introduce 3-year terms starting around Easter2015, phased to maintain a balance between continuity and new appointments. This new structure requires a change to the AVA constitution that needs approval at the 2014 AGM, and so does not apply to the present election.
Candidates should submit to Mark Georgeson ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) a 100-word statement about themselves and what they would like to do for the AVA. These statements will be used to provideinformation for voters in the election.
The deadline for receiving nominations is: Monday 10th March 2014 (midnight GMT).
