Hello,
I have a great deal of sympathy for John. I would advise that he includes his work in his cv. He'll be better able to describe his cataloguing work in interviews than the person who lied. He'll do better, will have the evidence to back his answers in job interviews and, in the end, good will prevail.
However I disagree with the idea that all 'project workers' or cataloguers should be credited publicly on published online catalogues. I would like to share our internal guidance with you:
Names of TNA paid staff are not credited or displayed on the catalogue, as our cataloguing output as TNA staff is Crown Copyright. The Copyright Officer (in January 2007 and in February 2013) advised that it is universal government practice not to acknowledge the author of corporate texts, except for instance in the case of a chairperson of a body producing a report and the author of work published as an editor.
We do acknowledge external funding, cataloguing projects carried out with the support of other organisations, volunteers and data gifts from readers (which we do have to qa). We do not acknowledge the notification of minor catalogue amendments. Here you are some examples, under the note element:
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C10117
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C13526
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C14305
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C9297
It's good practice to keep a good audit trail in the back office system showing who loaded, catalogued, checked and released catalogue entries but we do not publish our names or credit our work as authors of catalogue descriptions. I think we see ourselves as archivists and civil servants, facilitators and enablers but not as record creators. The last couple of phrases are my very personal opinion, not TNA policy.
Best regards
Jone

Would it be possible to contact the organization and ask them insert your name as the cataloguer into the collection level description? You can then supply a link to the online catalogue to the prospective employer. We credit our project workers when we web-mount their work; it is common enough practice, I think. Also, do not underestimate the power of professional networking; if your former employers know s/he has lied on his/her CV, many others in the profession will soon know. And, if we were advertising a post we would notice if an applicant avoided putting down their most recent employer.
Good luck!

Subject: Archival work experience on CV
Hello,
I'd appreciate any advice or hear from anyone who has had a similar experience. I have completed a substantial archival cataloguing contract but have learned recently that a person who had worked for the organisation in an administration capacity before I had started has been claiming that they were an archivist there and that they have on their CV that they catalogued the work I have done. The person in question I understand is now a qualified archivist and has worked in that capacity since. What concerns me is that if we both went for the same job (it could happen) what would a potential employer think? I don't know the person but have it on good authority that they asked two previous work colleagues who they are friends with for a reference therefore avoiding the need to put down their previous employer. So a potential employer would be none the wiser that their job description is not accurate.
Is this a common practice in the archival sector and how can I ensure that I am the one who is rightfully credited for the work done.
John
