Dear All,
With apologies for the formatting in the previous post!
Please may I bring this volunteer opportunity to your attention.
The archives of the Devonshire Collection, held at Chatsworth, Derbyshire, are planning a repackaging exercise and are looking for volunteers who can give upwards of one day’s worth of time during the 12th-23rd May, 2014.
Background:
The archives reflect the daily lives and concerns of the Cavendish family, and the people who worked for and with them on their estates in England, Ireland and Scotland. Spanning over 500 years of history, from Bess of Hardwick to the 21st century, the archives encompass not only Chatsworth but also the bulk of the surviving records of other Cavendish houses and estates.
Project Description: The project will focus on the rehousing of records created by the Cavendish estates. Largely dating from the 18th century onwards, these records include correspondence files; accounts and other financial documentation; terriers; surveys; rentals, and a large number of maps and plans. Documents are in need of basic cleaning and rehousing in appropriate archival quality packaging. In the first instance we are planning a two week project to repackage those items most in need of attention. There may be further time given to the project later in the year.
Skills: This role would suit volunteers that: have the ability to pay attention to detail; can handle fragile historic material with care; have the ability to work as part of a team and have a willingness to undertake repetitive tasks. Some lifting and carrying of material may also be required.
Benefits:
• Opportunity to learn about a career in archives.
• Opportunity to observe how an archive is managed in a historic house setting.
• Introduction to basic preservation and collections management activities.
• Experience of working with archival material.
