PhD Student / Researchers will conduct ethnographic research in Portugal (2 positions), Italy (2 positions), Greece (2 positions) or Spain (1 position). They are expected to complete their PhD by the end of the Grant (4 years) or, in the case of non-degree seeking researchers, publish several papers in refereed indexed journals. They will take an active role participating in scholarly activities related to the project. Researchers are expected to be able to travel for research and be flexible as to residence. There is no nationality/residence restriction. The main communication language is English.
The project proposes a bottom-up approach to economic dynamics and conceptual frameworks. It is dedicated to give theoretical value to non-academic logics that guide economic practice and to explain their significance for understanding practices that have an effect in the large scale economy. Four Southern European countries –Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain— have been selected as research sites. The research method is a multi-sited and multi-scalar ethnography that investigates the practices of making a living among people who are experiencing downward social mobility due to the adjustment measures that have followed the crisis. Researchers will carry on the observation of households in order to elicit ordinary people’s practices in pursuit of a livelihood, including projects for economic improvement. The research will also address regulation of livelihood processes by the State and other institutions.
