Kent Social Anthropology Research Group
Springtime Symposium
Space, Place and Territoriality
May 9, 2014
10am-6pm
Cathedral Lodge, Canterbury
From Durkheim’s concern with space as a neo-Kantian category of the human mind to a late culturalist focus on the territorial claims of the politics of identity, twentieth century social sciences have long been preoccupied with the social and cultural implications of the relational positioning of humans. Today, debates about boundaries and conflict rage on as discussions about dwelling and ontogeny assume greater centrality. Space, place, and territoriality remain as pivotal areas of theoretical elaboration. In its annual Summer Term event, Social Anthropology at Kent aims to focus on this recurrent theoretical crossroads of social scientific thinking
