DESCRIPTION: Clinical and imaging biomarkers that aid in making treatment decisions will play an important role in achieving personalised medicine for patients in a wide range of diseases including cancer, epilepsy, and bacterial infections. An efficient randomised controlled trial (RCT) design is crucial for evaluation of the clinical utility of these biomarkers. Although a variety of biomarker-guided designs have been proposed recently, the statistical validity of the RCT design, application and interpretation has not yet been fully explored. This project is aimed at thoroughly reviewing such designs and undertaking statistical evaluation of key aspects of the trial design such as sample size calculation, type of the estimation process and interpretation of treatment effect. It is also aimed at exploring trial monitoring issues that arise because of the complexity of such RCT designs.
Applicants should have, or expect to hold a Masters-level qualification in Statistics, Mathematics, Epidemiology or in a related Quantitative Health Sciences area. English language requirement for EU/Overseas students is an IELTS score of 6.5 with no band score lower than 5.5.
