Dear all,
We would be grateful for circulating this call which might be of interest
to some members of this mailing list.
With kind regards,
Aleksandra Lis
The call for papers is now open for the *EASST 2014 conference: Situating
Solidarities: social challenges for science and technology studies*, taking
place in* Torun, Poland, 17-19th September 2014 *(www.easst.umk.pl)
We would like to invite you to present a paper at the* session Energy
Controversies and Technology Conflicts. *
http://www.nomadit.co.uk/easst/easst2014/panels.php5?PanelID=3206
Developments in energy sector have been caused various social controversies
in the last decades. Development of nuclear energy, renewable energy
sources, the underground CO2 storage, shale gas exploration - all have
triggered social concerns which often ended up in outright conflicts. With
the climate change policies and the disastrous accident in Fukushima, energy
has become a socially salient and intensively debated issue within the
European Union. Controversies leading to conflicts around particular energy
solutions and technologies constitute an important part of these debates.
Controversies may be publicly more or less displayed and conflicts may take
various forms, from local protests against given investments (e.g. against
the proposed siting of the facility) to global social movements and mass
protests.
These various controversial and conflictual aspects of energy developments
have become an interesting topic for STS analysis which we want to draw
upon in the sessions. We welcome empirical and theoretical contributions
addressing controversial aspects of energy developments and their potential
to transform into conflicts. Of special interest are papers with clear
relevance to social practices in conflict management, public communication
and technology governance. Comparisons with other types of technological
conflicts, such as conflicts over biotechnology or nanotechnology are
welcome as well.
Especially we would like to encourage young researchers from Eastern and
Central Europe to present their findings as the session has an important
networking purpose as well.
Please send your abstract up to 250 words not later then on* 23rd April
