Subject: Charity Archives in the 21st century
Dear Colleagues
The Royal Voluntary Service is proud to announce the publication of our report "Charity Archives in the 21st century".
The archives of Charities are some of the most important archival collections this country has (two charities collections are included on the UNESCO UK memory of the World Register) and they give a unique and important insight into British Society particularly during the late 19th and 20th centuries. However the unique circumstances of charities, having to focus all their resources into delivering their charitable purpose, means many are often unable to spend as much on the maintenance of their collections as they might like. This has led to the destruction, loss and disposal of many collections over the years and this still remains a problem today.
This report, which I wrote in my own time, attempts for the first time to combine both quantitative data on the scope, scale and variety of archives of Charities as well as gathering qualitative opinion from those who look after, own and use these collections. The results, gathered from a series of one to one interviews undertaken over the summer of 2013, paints a vivid picture of the state of the sector and the challenges it faces, and attempts to identify some initial ways in which we can begin to tackle these.
This report is very much a first step in trying to properly elucidate the issues at hand and to start a debate which we hope others can take forward and build upon to help secure a brighter future for this vital cultural heritage.
