Maybe I'd add that getting things into the UMD main part is probably quite a lot of work, as EGI puts their name to it, and wants to be confident that it has been tested by a number of sites, is fully supported etc. Software like gLite is in the main part of the UMD.
Putting things in the AppDB area is much easier, and you would be committing yourself to less in the future.
