JOB PROFILE - 'COST OF THE SCHOOL DAY' PROJECT MANAGER
The Project
The aim of this project is to reduce stigma and discrimination children and young people experiencing poverty can face in schools, and by doing so to remove barriers to learning.
This project will develop in partnership with children, young people, teachers and schools a means to 'poverty proof' the school day. Young people will highlight behaviours and practices they believe negatively impact on their school day.
Working with teachers and young people, the project will develop an action plan individually tailored to each school.
The outcomes of the project will be to change policy and practice within individual schools, where relevant. Through sharing the practice wider across the city, we also seek to have wider policy implications.

The Role
The success of the project is dependent upon establishing close and practical working arrangements with selected schools, teachers and young people in Glasgow. The Project Manager's principal task will be to manage these relationships.
The Project Manager will carry out an audit of school policies and practice, asking questions of staff, children and young people and gathering data to establish a picture of how the school impacts on children and young people experiencing poverty.
The Project Manager will present a series of recommendations to the schools for action, individually tailored to each school. The outcomes will be changes to the practices of the school, leading to the reduced stigmatisation of pupils from poorer backgrounds, as well as raising awareness about the ways in which poverty impacts on pupils' lives.
Overview of role:
. Liaise and develop close working relationships with young people and teachers within selected schools
. Develop an action plan for each school based on students' views
. Document and record the actions taken in response to the recommendations and the impact this has had within each school, from the perspective of teaching staff, children and young people and parents
. Monitor and evaluate process through feedback from participating schools, from teaching staff, children and young people
Reporting
The Project Manager will be managed by the head of the Child Poverty Action Group in Scotland, with a dotted line to a senior manager in Education Services.
The Project Manager will be accountable to the project's steering group. The Project Manager is not expected to have any line management responsibilities. The Project Manager will have a small budget to manage.
Duration
The secondment opportunity is for 15 months until June 2015.
Salary
The pay range is £29,000-£31,500 per annum, depending on experience.
Location
The Project Manager will be based in CPAG's Glasgow offices and Education Services offices and will be required to travel to schools across Glasgow.
Skills and Experience
The Project Manager will have the following skills and experience:
Experience:
. Working with young people
. Qualitative research with young people (desirable)
. Facilitating workshops/ review sessions to secure outcomes
. Project planning, management and implementation
. Partnership working and negotiation
Knowledge:
. Understanding of education principles and practice in Scotland and in Glasgow
. Understanding of poverty in Glasgow
Skills
. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
. Ability to plan own workload and work with minimum supervision
. Ability to work across organisations
. Experience of reporting to management group
. Communicating and disseminating findings to different programme partners and others through reports and presentations
. Ability to work as part of a team
