These 3, free SRA events are by coincidence all on Thursday 27 February:
'Data analysis: myth creation or myth busting?' - SRA Cymru evening seminar, Cardiff. 4.45 - 6pm
Steve Marshall, Chief Social Researcher in the Welsh Government, argues that the way we analyse data can set the agenda for the way an issue is thought about. Analysis that is too simplistic can create ‘urban myths’ that are then difficult to overturn. But not analysing data to explore a particular issue may allow equally ingrained views based on ‘received wisdom’ to be perpetuated. The presentation illustrates these points with examples, and highlights some important considerations for how we analyse data.
SRA 'Northern and Central' England regional meeting, Manchester. 11am - 1pm
Helen Kara, SRA Board member, invites you to this initial meeting in Manchester. The aim is to enable researchers to get to know each other, and to find out what the group wants for the future. For example, are there research issues you would like to discuss with local fellow-researchers? Would it be helpful to hold SRA seminars on topics of interest? These are just two thoughts - please come along to make connections and discuss what’s needed.
'Qualitative Research Today' - SRA evening seminar, London. 5 - 6.30pm
It's been 10 years since the first edition of NatCen Social Research's seminal text book 'Qualitative Research Practice: A guide for social science students and researchers' was published by Sage. Late 2013 saw the publication of the second edition, revised to incorporate new and exciting developments in qualitative research. At this seminar, QRP authors Carol McNaughton Nicholls and Caroline Turley will reflect on these developments.
