Lifecourse transitions: opportunities for sustainable lifestyles?
University of Surrey, 15-16th July 2014
The organising committee are pleased to announce a call for papers for a two day workshop at the University of Surrey on ‘Lifecourse transitions: opportunities for sustainable lifestyles?’
Lifecourse transitions, (eg having a child, moving home or retiring), are known to lead to changes in a variety of aspects of everyday life, such as travel, leisure, energy use and purchase of consumer goods. Whether such transitions produce points at which individuals consciously reflect on the lifestyle they want and are able to have, or reflect changing social constraints of action, is a matter for empirical research. Some suggest that lifecourse transitions offer opportunities for ‘moments of change’ where people may be encouraged to live more sustainably. Others identify such moments as disruptions to the social organization of everyday life that, depending on the social context, can lead to change or retrenchment into habitual and conventional ways of life. Whilst theoretical debates continue about the best approach to understanding the formation of everyday habits and routines and the performance of everyday practices, there has been little empirical research exploring how everyday practices change or remain stable through lifecourse transitions.
This two day multidisciplinary workshop offers a unique opportunity to combine these different approaches. We are therefore inviting theoretical and empirical contributions from a variety of disciplines which explore the experiences of those undergoing lifecourse transitions, and aspects of sustainable everyday practices and lifestyles. In particular, we invite abstracts of no more than 250 words in the following areas:
• empirical work on the experiences of those undertaking a variety of lifecourse transitions, such as leaving home for the first time, having a first child, moving home or retiring;
• empirical work on different aspects of sustainable lifestyles, such as food acquisition, reducing waste, and saving energy;
• theoretical work on habits and practices in relation to their contribution to debates surrounding the meanings and experiences of everyday (sustainable) lifestyles through lifecourse transitions.
We encourage original national and international research contributions. The workshop will also provide opportunities for intellectually stimulating knowledge exchange and new collaborations across disciplines and topics. Please visit http://www.ias.surrey.ac.uk/workshops/lifecourse/cfp.php to submit an abstract.
