Dear Colleagues,
I would be grateful if you could pass on the information below to any interested parties.
Best,

Three PhD studentships in healthcare modelling are available in the OR Group, Cardiff University. Each studentship is funded for 3.5 years, commencing next academic year 2014/15 under the supervision of Professor Paul Harper and Dr Vince Knight. These are matched funded studentships between Cardiff University and two local health boards: Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, and Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
The successful applicants will join a growing team of researchers in the Cardiff OR group collaborating with health boards on an exciting range of research topics. For example over the last 12 months alone, these 2 health boards have funded between them 6 post-doctoral research associates. The PhD students will be members of this wider team and benefit from the collective experience and research expertise.
The precise nature of research topics for the three students is somewhat flexible, depending on any preferences of those appointed and any particular priorities of the health boards. However examples of recent and on-going research projects include:
- Time dependent priority queueing models for ambulance crew rostering
- Robust optimisation for operating theatre scheduling
- Ambulance allocation for maximal survival with heterogeneous outcome measures
- Modelling critical care services
- Selfish routing in public services (utilising routing game theory)
- Optimal control of queueing systems (with Markov Decision Processes)
- Investigating social networks using agent based simulation and link prediction methods (application to smoking cessation programmes in schools)
- Hierarchical Bayesian models for improving short-term forecasting of hospital demand
Funding (fees, stipend and conference travel allowance) is only available for strong UK/EU candidates (i.e. holding or expecting a First class honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Mathematics, OR/MS, Statistics, Computer Science etc).
To apply, please send your CV together with a statement of support to Professor Paul Harper ([log in to unmask]) by 31st March 2014. The statement of support should indicate why you wish to pursue a PhD in healthcare modelling and outline at this stage any particular research methods and/or healthcare applications that you might be interested in and why. If you have yet to complete your first degree, please indicate your results to-date and predicted degree class. Likewise if you are currently completing a Masters degree please state performance to-date.
