Apologies to those who may receive multiple copies of this message:
As some of you may know, Janet has been considering the deployment of a modest development overlay to enable groups interested in Software Defined Networks to interconnect with each other and to undertake R&D projects.
This has been mentioned informally in various fora over the past few months, and Janet would now like to gather interested parties together to help define what we do.
Present thinking would have three devices embedded within Janet with point-to-point layer2 connections between them (implemented over the lightpath service). These would be located in London (close to existing Janet infrastructure and enabling access to mainland Europe and beyond as required), the South-West (Bristol), and the North. This would give reasonable geographic coverage, and individual research groups would connect into one of these locations with a layer2 service (Lightpath/VPN).
Janet will hold a requirements meeting in London on March 26th to help define how this work should proceed. The main aim of the meeting will be to confirm interest from individual research groups and to reach some consensus on broad requirements to inform which equipment should be acquired to implement this overlay.
We are currently looking for a suitable venue, and the formal meeting will start at 11:00 (refreshments at 10:30) and close at 15:30, with lunch at 12:30.
Please would you forward this message to any other colleagues who might be interested, and for those who would attend, please me know so that we can manage catering etc.
I'm away for a few days, back on Monday 3rd March, so If anyone has questions about this meeting please send me a message and I'll reply on my return.
Best regards,
David Salmon
