Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the Inaugural Yorkshire Medical Sociology Meeting which will take place on Monday 24 February 2014, 13:00 - 17:30, in Lecture Theatre 1, School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield.
Keynote address Professor Mary Dixon-Woods "Knowing about patient safety: how hard can it be?"
I will identify the fugitive nature of knowledge about patient safety, showing how ways of knowing are pervaded both by technical difficulties and by interests. I will show how 'blindsight' may be induced by reliance on forms of knowledge that enjoy institutional privilege but may conceal rather than reveal risk, and point to the challenges of accessing knowledge that is valuable but elusive because of its forbidden character.
Also featuring Postgraduate Students and Researchers from the region:
Sian Beynon-Jones from The University of York will speak on:
"Without delay: Using women's accounts to trouble the temporalities of abortion policy and practice in England."
Ana Manzano from The University of Leeds will speak on:
"Are the British less altruist than the Spanish? Exploring the Social Production of Deceased Organ Donation."
Charlotte Jones from the University of Sheffield will speak on:
"Disordering Intersex: The Significance of Diagnosis, Definitions and Labels."
