Dear All,
We are trying to collect screenshots of wifi splash screens as
experienced on a mobile phone. We are interested to see how visitors to
museums experience the organisation at this point. This is
micro-research to help us scope out the full range of digital points of
contact that people have with us when they visit.
To do this we are simply asking people to tweet a screenshot of any
wifi splash screen they experience on their mobile, using the hashtag
#mobilewifisplash . This is quick and easy to do and means we can
collate them later.
To participate in this easy crowd-sourced research you just need to
tweet something as simple as...
#mobilewifisplash <pic url of splashscreen> at <name of museum/other
organisation> (plus comment if you like)
Once we have enough examples, we’ll post some analysis on the V&A
Digital Media blog www.vam.ac.uk/digital. Of course in the meantime, you
can search on #mobilewifisplash directly on Twitter and see what the
community have contributed so far. Hey, everyone’s a winner J
We’d like to think can get at least 40 to get started. Here are two:
V&A - http://t.co/Q1IIHAXBJz (hmm...)
Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam http://t.co/9h5r9RU1m8 (looks lovely!)
The Cloud http://t.co/cB39YpJgqm (obviously commercial example, but
bold design)
We are interested in museums, but really not limiting the research to
this. We are interested in getting lots of museums, cultural and leisure
venues as well as any other examples. Anyone catching a flight/train can
help with examples of traveller market wifi like Boingo, etc. We are
just trying to get sufficient examples to analyse common features and
see if this shows up anything interesting.
Background
We know that web phones are owned by the majority of people in the UK.
We also know that they are the digital device that people tend to take
everywhere, and specifically our visitors not only take bring them when
visiting, they tell us they use them when they visit. We are looking at
digital services via audience bring-your-own-device BYOD and wifi splash
screens are an interesting point of contact.
We are NOT looking at this as a security or rule-enforcement matter. We
are looking at non-obtrusive audience contact - a potentially beneficial
service. We are considering the idea that wifi splash screens should not
be seen as the devil's work that is just an annoying and off-putting
nuisance (which many are, especially any that need a sign up!). We are
exploring the idea that if designed well, they might possibly be useable
as a useful welcoming service for our new visitors (or at least visitors
who are using our wifi for the first time) - a way to make sure they can
see all the many great things they can get when they visit and so on.
All splash screens are welcome. The only restriction is they must be a
screenshot from a mobile phone. Anyone not on twitter, can email me
directly if you like [log in to unmask] .
Thanks in anticipation.
