Hi Emily
Do you want to give them internet access as a visitor benefit or are you
interested in them accessing your
information/collections/interpretation? We make a product that does open
access Wi-Fi for delivering web-based content without connecting to the
Internet. It won't let your visitors open their emails or browse the
web, but they can use their normal browser to see your museum or
interpretive content, which is loaded directly onto it. To answer your
questions:
1. do you know roughly what your annual cost is (I know this will vary depending on contract types)
> There is a one-off capital cost of £1,200, after that it is free
2. Do you password protect the wi-fi, or allow completely open access?
> No need - there are no security implications as it does not give access to anything except itself
3. Does your contract have a download limit on it?
> No limit - the device normally holds up to 60Gb
4. Do you think it's worth it?!
> Yes - ;-)
5. Is there anything else you would advise us thinking about? e.g. benefits or pitfalls?
If you have overseas visitors they may be roaming, or on a local SIM, so
reluctant to use their meager/expensive data allowance. Not good for
critical visitor information.
I think it is nice to provide internet access in cafes etc. but to some
extent, you want your visitors to focus on your collection and not be
distracted by opening their emails etc. Info-Point provides access only
to your local information. More info at: www.info-point.eu especially
the FAQ section.

Neil Rathbone
