The Museum of Design in Plastics is one of three partners in a research project here in the UK. It is called 10 Most Wanted and uses social media to encourage people to engage with galleries and museums.
Arts partner: The Museum of Design in Plastics<http://www.modip.ac.uk/>
Research partner: University of Brighton<http://www.brighton.ac.uk/cem/>
Technical partner: Adaptive Technologies Ltd<http://www.adaptivetechnologies.com/>.
Context
Inspired by the FBI’s Most Wanted fugitives initiative, our 10 Most Wanted project combines the web, social media and gaming to motivate the public to search for unrecorded information about cultural artefacts.
Within a competitive context, it enables players to work together and reach out to other groups for assistance. It encourages them in physical enquiry as well as online research, thus taking a step beyond most existing crowd-sourcing projects.
It also helps curators to grow public interest around a collection and provides a framework for integrating user-generated content into curated collections.
By asking the public for help, we aim to make art less precious and more connected with its audience.
Communication
The core of the project is our website: www.10most.org.uk<http://www.10most.org.uk/>
Here you will find the ten objects currently being researched, the solved cases, our Hall of Fame and more information about the project.
The public discussion takes place mostly in our Facebook group: 10mostinvolved<https://www.facebook.com/groups/1396648167216137/>. This is where people pick up the research thread and make their own contributions.
Outcomes
10 Most Wanted is funded by: NESTA Digital R&D Fund for the Arts<http://www.nesta.org.uk/project/digital-rd-fund-arts>. The lessons learned will be disseminated through our blog and other channels for the benefit of others working in the cultural heritage community.
Spread the word
We need your help to spread the word. The project is scheduled to run until the end of March, so we need lots of publicity now to encourage people to join in and have a go.
Why not see what you can contribute and also please pass it on to anyone you think might enjoy it.
Best wishes
Susan
