Hi,
Here at Manchester Art Gallery we have historically limited the maximum
resolution of all our collection images published online to 600x600. This
was to limit unauthorised downloading from online visitors. This detail
formed part of our standard online copyright permission request and was
applied to the rest of our collection that was not within copyright as a
matter of course. There have over the past 5 years been discussions (some
very heated) about whether this maximum pixel dimension should be changed
to reflect the shift in screen size/resolution. It remained the same.
However this month we opened our "Sculptural Forms" exhibition which
features a number of works from our own collection, some of which have had
new professional photographs taken as they are heavy awkward sculptures
which rarely are in a position to be photographed properly. They are
mostly modern works so are within copyright needing new permission
requests. I made the bold decision when sending out new requests to offer
the artists a choice of resolutions up to 1200x1200. All but one have
agreed to this larger size. I'm now thinking of changing the request to
just state 1200x1200 as our preferred choice.
It has since been raised have we gone far enough with this decision, the
iPad Air Mini retina has a 2048x1536px resolution and the only way is up!
I would like to know where other institution's policies and practices
stand with this?
What resolution do you publish your online images at?
What is the general response from the copyright holders you ask about
image size?
What are the opinions on how larger images affect the infamous
"unauthorised downloading" issue?
Ideally I would like to publish the 1200x1200 image for the rest of our
collection where copyright has elapsed.
