Dear All,
With apologies for cross-posting.
Sandra Beer and Dr Sarah Pogoda (both DAAD) at the Department of
Germanic Studies at the University of Sheffield have organised a film
series on:
"Shock and Fear in German and Dutch Cinema"
The German and Dutch film industry has a history of challenging
productions; challenging in the choice of subject matter and in the,
often daring, representation of sensitive social issues. The production
of film away from the Anglo-American centre has resulted in a rich
alternative cinematic narrative offering a frank and confrontational
portrayal of wider societal concerns. In this series, we will focus
specifically on transgressive moments that not only shock but also offer
the opportunity to question, often unconscious, barriers and
assumptions. The films are connected by their portrayal of ‘shock and
fear’ and the ‘other’ in contemporary German and Dutch society.
Each screening will be introduced by an expert from the University of
Sheffield.
