Dear All,
This is for geophysicists with a good knowledge
of the UK geophysics "scene". The BGA would like to
see geophysics well represented on NERC's Strategic
Programme Advisory Group, since many academic
geophysicists rely on NERC for funding. Please do let
us know if you are putting yourself forward.
There is also a mechanism for nominating another person.
If you have a suitable geophysicist in mind, please do
try this mechanism, or let us know (in confidence if
you wish) and we might approach the person directly
on behalf of the BGA to nominate themselves.
Note the closing date: 19th March at 16:00 (GMT).
Regards,
Sheila Peacock

*OPPORTUNITY TO JOIN THE STRATEGIC PROGRAMME ADVISORY GROUP *
Closing date for nominations: 16:00 on 19 March 2014
The Natural Environment Research Council <http://www.nerc.ac.uk/>(NERC)
is seeking applications from across the environmental sciences from both
the research and user communities in academia, policy, business and NGOs
for membership of its Strategic Programme Advisory Group
<http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/spag/index.asp> (SPAG). NERC anticipates
making twelve appointments which together will form an expert group
drawn from a wide range of environmental science disciplines and sectors
of our diverse research and user communities.
This is an exciting and influential role. SPAG members will be central
to the development and prioritisation of strategic research that tackles
societal challenges through environmental science and delivers NERC's
strategy. SPAG will make recommendations to NERC’s Science and
Innovation Strategy Board (SISB) and to the NERC Executive on how to
invest NERC’s Strategic Research funding. Listening, engaging and
facilitating, SPAG members will act as an interface between NERC and its
communities to ensure that NERC’s strategic investments are appropriate,
timely, support excellent research, and tackle environmental challenges
faced by business and society.
You will be an innovative thinker, an expert in your area of
environmental science or profession with a commitment to solving
real-world problems through environmental science. You will have the
ability to recognise emerging ideas and opportunities across all of the
NERC remit. SPAG members should be able to take a visionary perspective
and be skilled at making judgements across a range of scientific,
strategic and policy issues.
Appointments will be for one year in the first instance, with the
expectation that membership will be extended for a further two years. It
is expected that the role will require six days per year for meetings
plus additional preparation time. In addition, SPAG members will be
expected to be active in engagement with the community and the NERC
Executive to develop ideas.
