Oneself as Another: The Problem of ‘Voice’ in Alzheimer’s Life Writing
Dr. Lucy Burke
Date: Wednesday 12 February 2014
Time: 2.15pm–3.45pm
Place: Eden 109, Liverpool Hope University, UK
This seminar will consider the problem of ‘voice’ in relation to auto/biographical representations of dementia. Lucy Burke will explore the question of ‘self-representation’ and its centrality to disability activism in relation to cognitive impairment and in the context of the emphasis placed upon inter-subjectivity in the theoretical and therapeutic discourses of the personhood movement in dementia studies. Drawing upon a range of auto/biographical writings produced in the wake of the so-called Alzheimer’s epidemic of the last 25 years, the argument is that an engagement with this body of life writing raises important questions about the concept of ‘voice’ and the epistemological and ethical difficulties that attend the process of speaking for and about oneself and another.
Lucy Burke is Principal Lecturer in the Department of English at Manchester Metropolitan University. She is co-founder (with Raquel Medina) of the International Network of Literary and Cultural Dementia Studies. She is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Literary & Cultural Disability Studies and has guest edited a special issue on representations of cognitive impairment.
