A long-established paper and archives conservation studio in Yorkshire, Artworks Conservation, has developed a new service for archives and museums to create high-quality, archival facsimiles of documents, maps, manuscripts, photographs and artworks. This allows archivists and curators to use facsimiles for longer term display and handling, with the added confidence that original documents are handled by a conservator throughout the process. With the centenary of WW1 upon us, we anticipate this service proving a useful way of displaying letters, including making double-sided copies, from family archives without the risk of original materials fading or being damaged from handing.
In conjunction with a fine art printer, we have selected a range of acid-free, museum quality inkjet papers of various weights from writing to watercolour paper which can match the characteristics of historic papers. Using high fidelity scanning or high resolution photography up to and beyond A0 format, convincing copies are produced using a giclee printer with light resistant inks. They can be digitally retouched or mounted and framed for display if required.
