The MRC Biostatistics Unit undertakes research on statistical methods and their application to the design, analysis and interpretation of biomedical studies, to advance understanding of the cause, natural history and treatment of disease, and to evaluate public health strategies. A research team under the direction of Professor Vern Farewell aims to develop statistical methods for the analysis of complex observational and longitudinal data that arise in medical research. In addition, the research team has significant involvement in a variety of substantive medical research projects,
We are seeking a statistician to contribute to this research team. Current research interests include multi-state models, joint modelling of longitudinal and time to event processes, particularly in the situation of informative observation, and the development of two-part models for "zero-heavy" data. Primary medical research collaborations are in the field of rheumatology. You will be expected to contribute to the on-going statistical methodological research and to the substantive medical collaborations. Development of new areas of research that are relevant to the goals of the research team would be encouraged.
By the time they take up the appointment, the successful applicant will have a PhD in a strongly quantitative subject, ideally statistics. Experience in statistical models of for the analysis of longitudinal data would be an advantage. Applications are also welcome from those with more generic statistical experience who are interested in applying their skills to a new topic area, or from other mathematical scientists enthusiastic to start a career in statistics. You will be supported in their career development with a range of formal courses and on-the-job training.
