I spent December 2013 by the sea and mountains at Muizenberg, near Cape
Town, hearing about snow, rain and floods in Europe. I was not on holiday,
but teaching survival analysis to a dedicated and enthusiatic group of
students at AIMS (www.aims.ac.za).
The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a centre for
tertiary education and research, which promotes mathematics and science in
Africa. AIMS trains talented students and teachers in order to build
capacity for African initiatives in education, research, and technology.
The Muizenberg centre opened in 2003, AIMS Senegal in 2011, AIMS Ghana in
2012, AIMS Cameroon in 2013, and AIMS Tanzania is due in 2014.
Courses are given in three week blocks by visiting academics. Offers for
pure and applied maths are plentiful, but more statistics and probability
courses would be welcome. Lecturers' travel and subsistence is paid, and
an honorarium is offered. To offer courses, by 28 February for the 2014/15
year, please see
http://www.aims.ac.za/en/apply/structured-masters-course-proposals
Post-graduates who are completing their dissertations might consider
working, paid, for a year, assist the visiting lecturers in tutorials and
practicals. http://www.aims.ac.za/en/opportunities/tutors
