Thinking Beyond Consumer Capitalism: Media and the Limits to Imagination
For people in the developed world, our dominant economic system - consumer capitalism – may be past its sell by date. Despite mounting evidence that consumer capitalism can no longer deliver on its promises, why is it that we devote so little time to imagining other forms of human progress? The answer, Lewis suggests, is that despite moments of innovation and genius, our cultural and information industries limit rather than stimulate critical thinking, keeping us on the treadmill of consumption and narrowing our sense of possibility. If we are to find a way out of this cul de sac, Lewis argues, we need a cultural environment that encourages rather than stifles new ideas about what guides our economy and our society.
Professor Justin Lewis is Dean of Research in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and Head of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University.
He has written and edited many books about communication, the cultural industries, news and politics, including Constructing Public Opinion and Citizens or Consumers: The Media and the Decline of Political Participation and Climate Change and the Media. His latest book is Beyond Consumer Capitalism: Media and the Limits to Imagination, published this autumn.
Professor Toby Miller is author of over 30 books including Cultural Citizenship: Cosmopolitanism, Consumerism, and Television in a Neoliberal Age. He is currently Professor of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Cardiff and Sir Walter Murdoch Professor of Cultural Policy Studies at Murdoch University.
