Dear Colleagues
At Newcastle, we are seeing an increasing number of students with a recommendation for voluntary, timed rest breaks during formal exams. We understand that students are being awarded this adjustment at schools and colleges and come to us with a strong recommendation for the same.
Voluntary rest breaks are very difficult to manage in an exam room with multiple students and we have had complaints from both invigilators and students about disruption to others, the capacity for mistakes to be made etc.....
The numbers have been creeping up for the last few years but we saw a dramatic increase this year and I would be very interested to know if other HEIs have experienced the same and, also, how you deal with this adjustment practically.
I would be very grateful I you could answer the following questions please - we will collate and disseminate answers to all respondents.
Do you allow voluntary, timed, rest breaks during exams?
How many students sit exams at your institution?
How many students have this particular adjustment?
Have the numbers increased in recent years?
Do the students sit, individually or with others?
What is your process for invigilators to manage the breaks?
Many thanks
Liane
