The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS) at Heriot-Watt University (HWU) welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates for a post at any level up to Chair in the general field of stochastics, including pure and applied probability, stochastic analysis, stochastic modelling and statistics. The School is a partner in the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, through which its research activities across the entirety of mathematical sciences are combined with those of the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. The Institute is a major international centre for research in stochastics with MACS having particular strengths in its groups in probability and statistics, applied and computational mathematics, and actuarial and financial mathematics. Our research spans fundamental theory and methodology complemented by impact on application areas such as energy, communication networks, epidemic and ecological processes, actuarial modelling and financial risk. The Maxwell Institute performed extremely strongly in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, achieving critical mass as the third largest mathematics research unit in the U.K., and a combined submission has again been made to REF2014.
The School offers an ideal environment for the pursuit of research with the connectivity to users required for the generation of impact. We have strong links with the financial services industry, through the Scottish Financial Risk Academy, to the Actuarial Profession, to major energy companies and to public bodies with interests in disease control.
Demand for teaching in stochastics at both undergraduate and postgraduate level within MACS is buoyant. HWU was the first university in the UK to offer a specialist degree course in Actuarial Science and our Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics now offers BSc degrees in Actuarial Science, Financial Mathematics and Statistical Modelling; and MSc degrees in Actuarial Science, Actuarial Management, Financial Mathematics (joint with University of Edinburgh), Quantitative Financial Risk Management, and Quantitative Financial Engineering. There is a very active PhD program.
The postholder will be expected to lead and conduct excellent research in the general field of stochastics, to further knowledge exchange activities, to develop and deliver innovative teaching in actuarial science and financial risk on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and courses offered by the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, and to carry out such administrative and promotional activities as may be required to achieve these aims.
Applicants should hold a PhD and have an excellent track-record of publishing internationally excellent/world leading research outputs. For appointment at reader of chair level, applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong track record of research leadership, appropriate to the grade, as evidenced by funding awards or group development.
